This installment of the Grand Rounds section describes part of a continuous case conference organized by Lisa Mellman, M.D., and presented at the 1998 American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting in Toronto. It employs an educational format, which might be called "comparative therapeutics," that we have found helpful in teaching time-limited psychotherapies to psychiatric residents at Cornell University Medical College.
Clinical material from a single case presentation is formulated sequentially by experts from different psychotherapeutic viewpointsin this case, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and interpersonal. This process allows the audience to understand how each approach conceptualizes and intervenes to alleviate the patient's symptoms. It further demonstrates similarities ("common" or "nonspecific" factors) and differences among these approaches. Training directors and psychotherapy teachers take note: if you have not yet used this format, you and your trainees may find it worthwhile.
